If you are planning a home improvement on your home, it would be prudent to contact your local authority to check whether you require planning permission. That said, you shouldn’t need planning permission for double or triple glazed windows as this is likely to have very little impact on your neighbours and neighbourhood.

There can be a few exceptions:

  • If your house is a listed building
  • If your house is in a conservation area

    Adding bay windows to your house (if they were not there previously) classes as building an extension and, therefore, may be subject to planning permission. Celsius Home Improvements will handle any planning permission that may be required on your behalf.

    Listed buildings are protected by the Planning Act of 1990 which covers both the interior and exterior of the building.

    You need to apply for listed building consent when the following applies to you:

  • the existing windows are to be replaced with a new style of window
  • If the new windows are to have a different type of material than the existing ones
  • If you are changing the type of glazing used. For example going from single to double glazing
  • If you are planning on painting the new windows a different colour to the originals

    • If you proposing to use new materials for the windows then it is likely that the local authority would require samples of materials that you propose to use.

    Similarly to listed buildings, houses that are located in a conservation area fall under the Planning (Listed Buildings and Conservation Areas) Act 1990. You will therefore require planning permission before you can install double or triple glazing to this type of property.

    Your local council will be able to give you advice on what you can and can’t install to a house in a conservation area. For example, you may have to replace the windows with a like-for-like replacement.
